SUPERMOON RISING: How the Moon Controls Your Catch

With a supermoon lighting up the Gulf Coast skies this week, here's what every angler should know about lunar fishing patterns.

The Moon's Power Over the Tides

The moon's gravitational pull drives our tides, and when it's full (or new), that pull intensifies. Supermoons bring even stronger tidal movements, creating what anglers call "major feeding periods." These extreme tides push baitfish into new areas, and game fish follow the buffet.

Best Times to Fish During a Full Moon

The 90 minutes before and after moonrise and moonset are prime time. Why? Increased tidal flow means more water movement through channels and over structure, activating feeding behavior in redfish, speckled trout, snapper, and other Gulf species.

Tidal Movement = Fish Movement

Strong tides during moon phases create current that:

  • Flushes baitfish out of marshes and grass flats
  • Concentrates prey along channel edges and drop-offs
  • Triggers aggressive feeding responses in predator fish
  • Improves oxygen circulation in the water

Pro Tip from the Grander Marine Crew

During supermoons, adjust your fishing schedule. Fish are often more active during dawn and dusk, plus during those moonrise/moonset windows, even if that means a midnight run. The extra tidal flow makes it worth the effort.

Clear skies and tight lines!
